Every product sold in Indonesia — cosmetics, processed food, supplements, traditional medicine, medical devices — must carry a valid BPOM registration number. An expired or cancelled registration means the product can no longer be legally distributed. The letters at the start of a BPOM number tell you the product type, and for many categories whether it was made in Indonesia or imported. A number starting NA is a cosmetic, MD a locally made food, ML an imported food, and so on.
